This time of year.

I love Fall.

That’s a real ‘funeral director’ thing to say, isn’t it? But this time of year has always been my favorite. October in particular. But not because of Halloween (even though I truly love Halloween).

To me, this is the perfect time of year. The colors in Western New York are breathtaking and the air has just the right amount of coolness to it. The bitterness of the Buffalo winter is just around the corner, but we can’t feel it yet.

Fall is a gentle reminder. Time goes on and if we’re not careful it will pass us by. Just as quickly as the leaves change with another blink of the eye they are gone. Winter is here. The earth freezes.

I used to think that I wanted to die in the winter. Both of my grandparents were buried under a blanket of snow. But as time goes on I start to think that I’d like it to be Fall. I want my family to stay with my body as it goes into the ground. I want them to take a minute to look at the colors of the trees. To feel the air in their lungs. Things are changing. The earth will freeze but in the Spring flowers will bloom.

This time of year reminds me to slow down, because it passes so quickly. Reminders, reminders, reminders, all around me. Slow down Lauren, you’re doing okay. Look at the colors of the trees. Feel the air in your lungs. You’re not in the ground yet.
